What a pool permit costs in New York

The figures are not comparable to one another: some are flat minimums, some a percentage of job value, some charged per fixture, so what you pay depends on which schedule applies and on your job's valuation.
Residential building permit fee schedule flat fee lines: "Aboveground pool, spa, over two feet deep" $50.00 and "In-ground pool, spa, pond, over two feet deep" $150.00, each on top of the $25.00 application fee. EFFECTIVE 7/1/2025.

No DOB filing fee for a pool that meets the 1 RCNY 101-14 Table 1 exemption, though a plumbing permit for the slop sink carries its own fee. A pool that needs a work permit is filed as an alteration: Table 28-112.2 item 11 sets a one-, two- or three-family minimum filing fee of $170.00 (Alteration Type 1) or $130.00 (Alteration Type 2 or 3), being the "Minimum filing fee for the first $5,000, or fraction thereof, of the cost of alteration; plus $2.60 for each $1,000, or fraction thereof, of cost of alterations in excess of $5,000."

Miscellaneous Fees on the city's building permit fees page: "Swimming pool" $85.00. Pool wiring is a separate electrical charge, "Pool/hot tub wiring" $100.00. The fee page carries the notice "Fees for licenses, building, electrical, and plumbing permits, as well as for certificates of occupancy, will change effective July 1, 2026."

Charged as a building permit under Town Code 86-11C(1) as amended by Local Law No. 20-2024 (effective 4-2-2024): $200 for residential work with an estimated cost up to $1,000, then $200 plus $18 for each additional $1,000 or fraction thereof; a pool installed before a permit was issued is charged under 86-11C(2) at $400 plus $36 per additional $1,000. An in-ground pool also needs a plumbing permit for the vacuum breaker, filed by a Town licensed master plumber, at a minimum of $70 residential under 86-11P(1), plus a $100 certificate of approval of plumbing work under 86-11Q. Demolition of a swimming pool is a separate filing.
