What a fence permit costs in New York

The figures are not comparable to one another: some are flat minimums, some a percentage of job value, some charged per fixture, so what you pay depends on which schedule applies and on your job's valuation.
Residential building permit fee schedule flat fee line "Fence requiring a permit (over height, etc.)" $25.00, on top of the $25.00 residential application fee. The commercial schedule carries the same line at $50.00 on top of a $50.00 application fee. Both schedules are marked EFFECTIVE 7/1/2025.

No DOB filing fee where the fence is exempt. A fence that needs a permit is filed as an alteration on form PW1: Table 28-112.2 item 11 (Alteration work permit: One-, two- or three-family dwelling) sets an Alteration Type 2 or Type 3 minimum filing fee of $130.00 and an Alteration Type 1 minimum of $170.00, being the "Minimum filing fee for the first $5,000, or fraction thereof, of the cost of alteration; plus $2.60 for each $1,000, or fraction thereof, of cost of alterations in excess of $5,000." A temporary construction-site fence has its own line item: Table 28-112.2 item 36, "Construction Fence," $160.00 filing fee and $130.00 renewal.

The Fences (Residential and Village Center Districts) packet dated Mar 2026 states "Fee-$50.00" payable to the City Treasurer, with other payment methods available in person. The city's published fee tables carry no separate fence line item; a fence that is part of a larger building permit falls under Building Permit Fees based on the actual cost of work, which start at $75.00 for work costing $0 to $2,000.

Charged as a building permit under Town Code 86-11C(1) as amended by Local Law No. 20-2024 (adopted 3-12-2024, effective 4-2-2024): $200 for residential work with an estimated cost up to $1,000, then $200 plus $18 for each additional $1,000 or fraction thereof of estimated cost. Work put up before a permit is issued is charged under 86-11C(2) at $400 plus $36 for each additional $1,000. A $100 residential certificate of completion fee is payable when the building permit is issued (86-11L, Local Law No. 93-2022). The Department's own Fee Schedule Updated 2024, linked from the Building Permit page of the Online Permit Center, runs the same $200, $218, $236 ladder.
