What a pool permit costs in Michigan

The figures are not comparable to one another: some are flat minimums, some a percentage of job value, some charged per fixture, so what you pay depends on which schedule applies and on your job's valuation.
Building Permit Fees (effective October 2019, revised 7/15/2025) carries a flat line item: "Above Ground Swimming Pool* ... $125" with the footnote "(*requires separate Plumbing and Electrical permits)". Electrical Permit Fees (effective January 2020) charge "Swimming Pools, Spas, Hot tubs ... $25" plus the $15 base application fee, with $35 per inspection. An in ground pool has no flat line item and is charged on the estimated project cost permit fee scale plus the 20% plan examination fee.

Building permit fees are based on project cost under the BSEED Fee Schedule effective January 1, 2024, modified 7/18/2025: $2,000 or less, Flat $271.43; Over $2,000 but not over $25,000, First $2,000 Base $271.43 plus $34.09 Per $1,000 or fraction thereof over $2,000. Pool wiring is charged separately on the electrical schedule, PART A Base fee $66 plus $20 for each circuit.

FY 2027 Planning, Design and Development Fee Schedule effective July 1, 2026, Building Permits: "Residential Pool $66.00 plus Zoning Permit fee", with footnote 6 setting the 1-2 family Zoning Permit fee at $25 and footnote 4 allowing two flat fee permits to be combined for a $20 discount. Electrical Permit Fees add "Pool (bonding, motor, light with 2 inspections) $63.00" or "Hot Tub $21.00" on top of the electrical "Application (Includes 1 inspection) $52.00".
