Do you need a building permit in Idaho?

Usually yes, but not from Idaho itself: permits are issued by the city or county, not the state, so the rule that governs your project is the one your own jurisdiction publishes. 7 of those local rules require a permit outright, 6 depend on a size or scope condition the office publishes, and 0 need none. Idaho sets the building code those local rules derive from; your city or county sets the threshold and the fee.

Building without a permit in Idaho

Idaho Code 39-4111(2) makes it unlawful to do any construction, improvement, extension or alteration of a building in a city or county that enforces building codes without first getting a permit under that local government's ordinance. Under the Idaho Building Code Act's penalty section, a willful violation of the chapter or of the adopted codes is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $300, up to 90 days in jail, or both.

What each Idaho jurisdiction publishes

One line per jurisdiction, written from its own rules rather than from a state summary. This is the section that used to be a list of links, and the states with the fewest jurisdictions to compare are the ones it says the most about.
